With the ever-increasing focus on setting up an online presence or the increasing competitiveness of online businesses, there is a need for web data analysts who can help web-based business succeed or thrive online.

A web data analyst researches the activities of users as they interact with a website, identifies the measures critical to the survival of the web business and recommends actions in the form of web analytics reports for web managers, online marketing teams or business owners.

In this new global, digital, web-based economy, organizations of all types including non-profits, small businesses or Fortune 500 corporations are increasingly turning to the web for new opportunities, leads, prospects, customers, clients, sales, growth, income or profit.

This drive to put businesses on the web, is one of the most significant business trends of the past ten to fifteen years.

Since putting a business successfully on the web is a competitive, knowledge-based, skill intensive, high-visibility effort, a diverse team of web professionals including web designers, web business analysts, web developers, project managers and web data analysts is critical for success.

So, in this post, I will discuss the skills, qualifications, training and job opportunities of web data analysts in the context of an online or internet-based business.

Who Is A Web Data Analyst?

The web data analyst career is a relatively new profession and the job outlook of web data analysts is for all practical purposes tied to that of the web development or web marketing industry.

In other words, whenever organizations spend more advertising or marketing revenue on their websites or invest in more web development projects, you end up needing more web analysts.

There are three (3) primary qualifications for becoming a web data analyst:

Knowledge of Web Data Analysis Principles

You need to have a strong understanding of how web user activity data is generated.

Anytime a user visits a website, detailed information about that user’s interaction with the pages on that website is generated by the web servers hosting the website.

Web user activity data which is also known as weblogs or clickstream data, can be recorded, analyzed or measured using a number of web analytics tools or techniques.

Handson Web Traffic Tool Experience

A large quantity of user activity or clickstream data is generated whenever users browse the pages on a website.

For larger, highly-trafficked websites, the amount of clickstream data generated can quickly become staggering.

There are two (2) primary tools or techniques for analyzing the data generated by a users interactions with websites:

Web analytics tools may be used to import and analyze the text files generated from users activities on the website.

Web-based javascript files embedded on a web page can be used to transmit users activity data over to third-party services.

The tools commonly used for analyzing web traffic data include Google Analytics, Omniture, Web Trends and Relational SQL Databases!

Some organizations prefer to import web traffic data logs into a relational database like SQL Server so that they can write custom Sql Queries against the imported web traffic data.

One of the reasons why some organizations may prefer to import their web user activity data into a database and analyze it using SQL, is that they want total flexibility or control over which reports are generated or how the reports are calculated.

Organizations like this, don’t want to be confined to the set of canned reports typically presented by 3rd. party web analytics vendors.

Basic Statistical Knowledge

If you have basic statistical skills and you are strong at data analysis, you can help marketing managers find out why they are not getting enough sales on their websites based on your own data analysis.

This type of information is worth a lot of money to internet retailers because if they act on your advice or recommendation and increase their conversion rates or reduce their bounce rates, they can increase sales and make their shareholders or upper management team really happy

In addition, web analytics reports in most tools are calculated using basic arithmetical measures or statistical calculations.

For example, the Daily Visitor Report tells web or marketing managers; how many unique human visitors visited their website.

So, a solid understanding of how each web analytics report is calculated or generated can help your usage of that report in any specific tool (Sql Server, Google Analytics, etc.)

Some of the more frequently used web analytics reports include:

Unique Visitors Report – shows the number of new visitors or returning visitors. It also measures the amount of web traffic to a website.

Conversion Rate / Bounce Rate Reports – how successful web pages are at selling products/service or leaking the traffic to a website.

Bandwidth Utilization Reports – helpful for keeping within web hosting guidelines for bandwidth usage

Internal Referrers or External Referrers – top internal or external links referring visitors to the website

TOP Visited Pages – pages generating e.g., 80% of the site visits

Http Error Codes – for checking the health of your website.

Like I mentioned before, what matters is that you understand the purpose of a report and how or why a report is generated.

Based on this understanding, you can generate the right report for your web development team (who may want to checkup on the health of the website) or the marketing team (who may want to identify the pages that are leaking visitors to the website).

How Do You Become A Web Data Analyst?

Regardless of how you generate web analytics reports, the underlying principles are fairly straightforward.

Once you really understand how web traffic reports are generated, you can generate them either using a custom Sql query or a 3rd. party web analytics tools and still answer fundamental questions about the numbers presented on the report!

Here a few important web data analysis principles::

Most web analytics tools either use the web visitors IP address or a browser-based cookie or both to track the user’s clickstream activity.

Web user activity is measured in sessions. A session is an arbitrary number that determines the length or duration of a user’s visit in minutes.

Before you generate any web traffic report, you have to remove or filter out activities from spiders, bots or other non-humans. These activities may be segregated into another set of reports.

Before you generate any web traffic report, you also have to remove or filter out data generated by objects like pictures, javascript objects, flash or media files on the web page.

Which Web Analytics Tool Is The Best?

Questions like which web analytics tool is the best is often asked by tool-minded professionals.

Why knowledge of a tool is good, what is highly desirable, preferred or best is a strong understanding of the concepts or principles behind the usage of the tool … in other words, understanding the science or art of web analytics is much more important.

With a solution-oriented mindset, you can learn any tool presented by an employer or sell yourself confidently at a job interview even when you don’t have a required tool listed on your resume!

A web analysis career offers opportunities to business analysts or data analysts interested in a full-time job or a consulting position within a web development or web marketing group.

A web analyst with strong business analysis skills can also help customers or employers identify the key metrics that will be useful to the management or marketing team, document and validate these reports or improve the quality of their web traffic analysis efforts.

Happy New Year!! Here are some technology predictions for 2009 that are worth a read for software developers, business analysts and database developers who want to position themselves for success in 2009:

1. Pay attention to Social Media says CapGemini:

“2009 will be the year when use of social networking tools within companies will be the talk of the town. Yes, it has been around for a while but to be honest, nothing much has really happened apart from that Serena Software uses Facebook internally.

So when our global heads of Capgemini Consulting visited Sweden office last week and started talking about the power of social networking only five minutes into the talk I felt that something had changed. For the better. Substantial growth is predicted in web 2.0 for the enterprise within the next five years.”

2. The economy looms large says PCWorld:

“Ultimately, economic conditions will play a huge role in how 2009 pans out for the developer community. When customers aren’t buying, tool vendors don’t innovate — so don’t expect many groundbreaking new technologies to debut this year.

Among enterprise customers, tightening budgets are likely to put the kibosh on many an ambitious new project. But smart companies will realize that process automation is one of the best ways to reduce costs in any business.

Now may actually be the ideal time to revisit old software schemes that got shelved back when staffing budgets were flush. Layoffs and hiring freezes will mean there are fewer developers to go around, however, which could make smart projects infeasible for the time being.”

3. Agile development is a must says Barry Gervin:

“Many of my customers began large-scale re-writes of their key software assets in 2008, many of them against my recommendations. For most of my key customers in 2008 and into 2009 I’m an advocate of providing incremental value in short iterative releases, not major re-writes that take 6+ months to develop.

Even if your application is written in PowerBuilder 6 or Classic ASP, avoid the temptation to rewrite any code that won’t see production for 4 months or longer. We can work towards componentized software by refactoring legacy assets and providing key integration points so that we can release updated modules towards gradual migration.

It is difficult for software teams in this economy to produce big-bang, “boil the ocean”, build cathedral type projects. We simply can’t predict what our project’s funding will be in 4 months from now, or if we’ll be owned by another company, scaled down, out sourced or just plain laid off. That is of course unless you work for the government.

Government spending will continue if not increase in 2009, but still, try to spend our taxpayer money wisely by delivering short incremental software releases. It allows you to build trust with your customers, mark a line in the sand and move onward and upward, and let’s you move quickly in times of fluid business requirements and funding issues.

Incremental, Value-Based software development isn’t easy.
It takes lots of work, creative thinking, and much interop and integration work than one would prefer. It might easily seem like an approach that costs more in the long term, and in some cases you could be right. But if a company has to throw out work in progress after 6-8 months or never sees the value of it because of other changing business conditions, then what have you saved? Probably not your job anyway.”

Web Designers are the creative professionals who design “how websites look”.

According to a recent report, this is the year for web designers. And Monster.com (one of the premier job search websites) predicts a hefty 26 percent growth rate for the web design profession.
So, what?s web design and what does a web designer know and do?

Well, web designers are experts or professionals in making websites look good using graphics, HTML, XHTML and CSS.

If you are considering a career in web design, here are some sought after skills by hiring managers and recruiters:

You need to be strong in at least one graphics software package (Adobe, Macromedia, Flash, etc.)

You need to be fluent in CSS and XHTML.

You need to have good color co-ordination. That?s you must be able to come up with color schemes that blend and stand-out at the same time.

You need to be able to plan a website. Not as easy as it may sound because some websites consist of thousands of pages.

You need to be able to mock up a web page, design it and then develop it.

In addition to the skills listed above, exceptional web designers also know:

How to design accessible websites.

How to design websites with usability in mind.

How to design search engine friendly websites.

How to integrate websites with databases using Server Side scripting and programming languages like JSP (JavaServer Pages), ASP.NET, C#, Visual Basic .NET, PHP, Ruby, Perl, etc.

In previous posts, I mention that you don?t really have to be writing code 100% of the time to have a career in computer programming. As a web designer, your time will be spent between writing code and doing creative web design work. Each company or client will differ in how much code they expect a web designer to write.

Note that while some companies want a web designer who can do everything, others are purists in their approach and would like you to do 100% web design work. So, here is a career success tip for you.

And if you are considering a career in web design, according to this MSNBC article, this year is going to be a really good year for you
