  But regardless of the tool, data analyst career path or skill you choose, resist the temptation to master every single data analysis tool out there … as this would be futile.

  You need to start by getting a good understanding of the data analyst’s roles, duties, tasks and responsibilities or the techniques and principles commonly employed in the healthcare data analysis domain.

  So, let’s start by reviewing the healthcare data analyst job description.

  The healthcare data analysts’ job description includes importing, cleaning, transforming, validating or modeling healthcare data with the purpose of understanding or making inferences for decision or management purposes.

  The job description also includes presenting data in charts, graphs or tables, designing and developing relational databases for collecting data or building and designing data input or data collection screens.

  Finally, the healthcare data analyst may have to write Data Definition Language or Data Manipulation Language SQL commands, be responsible for improving data quality or designing and presenting inferences made by analyzing data using statistical techniques within Microsoft Excel, SAS, SQL Server, SPSS

  For example, if you understand how to analyze data, you can setup a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or a database like Microsoft Access or even an enterprise database like SQL Server to run your analysis!

  I have been talking about the data analyst’s skill set, background and technique. Now, let me address how you can get into a healthcare data analyst job.

  Strive to convey mastery of data analysis concepts at the job interview, so you can direct your technical interviewers to a favorable conclusion.

  For example, let’s say that a healthcare data analyst job description stresses SQL Server Reporting Services and you only have knowledge of Microsoft Access Reporting.

  What you may do, is let the technical interviewer know that you have strong relational databases skills and because of that, will be comfortable working in a SQL Server Reporting Services environment.

  Next, you can support your claims, by talking about the data analysis knowledge areas you’re skilled in (data validation, data modeling, data transformation, etc) .
